Principal’s Message
Welcome to St Francis Xavier’s Primary School Lurnea.
Inspired by the charism of St Francis Xavier, we are a Catholic learning community committed to igniting a love of God and a passion for learning in every child. Our motto, “Set Hearts on Fire,” speaks to our mission to ignite a passion for faith, learning and service in every student.
We are proud of the strong partnerships we build with our families and parish, recognising that education is most powerful when we work together. Our dedicated staff are committed to creating a safe, inclusive and engaging environment where every student is known, valued and challenged to reach their full potential.
I warmly invite you to be part of our vibrant school community, where together we truly set hearts on fire.
History- 1960: The parish of St Francis Xavier’s Lurnea began as a part of the All Saints Parish.
- 1962: The original church was built and later decommissioned to become school classrooms after the new parish church was established in 1993.
- 1975: St Francis Xavier’s Catholic Primary School Lurnea officially opened with just twenty-one students in Kindergarten and Year 1 with a single teacher. Parents volunteered to provide playground supervision.
- 2018: The Parish church saw significant refurbishment under the guidance of Father Thu Nguyen, transforming the space into a bright, peaceful place of worship.
- 2020: The school has grown to 14 classes and 395 students.
- In 2025–2026, our whole school building project provided refurbished contemporary classrooms, a new learning space with nine additional classrooms, an extended school hall, and upgraded outdoor facilities including a new soccer field and basketball court, creating a modern and engaging environment for our students to learn and thrive.
Charism
St Francis Xavier was a Jesuit priest and missionary who journeyed across Asia between 1537 and 1552, sharing the message of Christ with courage, zeal and a deep love for others.
At St Francis Xavier’s, we draw inspiration from his missionary spirit and the rich tradition of Jesuit values:
- Finding God in all things
- Care for the whole person
- Unity of mind and heart
- Magis – striving for the greater good and excellence in all we do
Guided by our motto, “Set Hearts on Fire,” we seek to ignite in each student a passion for faith, learning and service. Like St Francis Xavier, we are called to live with courage and compassion by reaching out to those in need, striving for excellence, and sharing our faith with joy.
Together, as a faith-filled community, we nurture hearts that are inspired to make a meaningful difference in the world.
At St Francis Xavier’s, we envision a vibrant learning community where respect, collaboration, compassion, excellence and service are at the heart of all we do. We strive to nurture students who are not only academically successful, but also compassionate, socially responsible and empowered to make a meaningful difference in the world.
Respect: We cultivate an environment where every individual is valued and treated with dignity. By fostering a culture of mutual respect, we empower our students to appreciate diverse perspectives and build positive relationships.
Collaboration: We believe in the power of teamwork and shared learning. Our community thrives on collaboration, encouraging students, staff and families to work together towards common goals, creating a supportive and dynamic educational experience.
Compassion: Compassion is at the heart of our school ethos. We encourage our students to act with kindness and empathy, understanding the importance of helping others and making a positive impact on the world around them.
Excellence: We are committed to achieving excellence in all aspects of our school. Through high standards and continuous improvement, we inspire our students to strive for personal and academic success, fostering a love of learning that lasts a lifetime.
Service: Service to others is integral to our mission. We instil a sense of responsibility in our students, motivating them to engage in meaningful service activities that benefit their local and global communities. Together, these values guide us in creating an inclusive, innovative and inspiring educational environment where every student can thrive and become a compassionate, capable leader of tomorrow.

The community of St Francis Xavier’s is one of welcome and friendship with a strong link between the school and the church.
Even though St Francis Xavier’s Parish has two schools in its ministry, Fr Thu is an active member of both communities.
The students celebrate mass alongside their parents, grandparents, and other community members in a spirit of inclusion. Our school, parents, and students are also directly involved in supporting those in need in our local and wider communities, through St Vincent de Paul, CatholicCare, and various other charities.
